Auto CAD or not to Auto Cad ?

To AutoCAD or not to AutoCAD that is the question???

I'm now in a dilemma -so far all my work has been done by hand , I'm told this is fine but by doing the line work of a plan in CAD first does give it a certain professional finish and it will also show the external examiners that I'm capable of using CAD.
- the only problem- is i will have to invest time into redrawing the plan in cad , and as i haven't used it since last summer it might take me a while!
-the plus-is once done i will never need to redraw again with the help of layers i can have everything on one model space- it will also make the next stage at 1:50 a little easier - (i hope)

OK i think i have just talked my self into doing the plan in CAD - but will this look right next to hand drawn perspectives and sections? i guess if i am using the same rendering techniques it will all look coherent!!!!

Any thoughts?

  1. Go on try it, you know you want to. A day or so spent redrawing your plan will save you days over the coming months.

  2. Hi Adele
The issue of hand rendering or CAD came up last year from two different sources. The first was the students concern that hand rendered work would not be marked as highly as CAD drawn/rendered work. Jamie stated that no distinction is made between the two. He was quite happy for students to go through the whole year without using CAD.
Also, after the final pin-up the external assessors, including John Wyer and Edward Hutchison among others, discussed the course with the whole of the final year. The issue of CAD or ‘hand drawn’ came up again. The response from the assessors was, and I will quote as best my memory permits…
“We are not looking for CAD ability in the final year work; we can teach CAD in a few days. What we are looking for is the ability of the graduate to design, and the ability of the student to express the design goals and process. This we cannot teach”.

If you want to give CAD rendering a go try it. But don’t feel you have to use it. I used a lot of photoshop to import hand rendered textures and trees etc, and all my annotation was in photoshop, but I did not use autoCAD at all in the final year! Even my construction drawings were done in photoshop.

Oh… and the assessors are not really there to assess you. They are there to assess the college. It was not an examination, more of a casual chat. It was a really nice part of the final week, they are really and genuinely interested in your work.

    Hope this helps a little

  4. thanks Paul, thats great advice, takes the stress off a bit- i am about half way through doing my plan in CAD and my shoulder hurts already!
Its taking a while due to no straight lines in my design! I might stick it out for this afternoon and then compare it to my hand drawn, i will also try to render both and see, i will put them on here to see what people think about them. Thanks again Paul,

  5. That was very enlightening, Paul. I see the external examiner's point (and we all have to as in two months' time we will all be at there mercy) but if design skills cannot be taught, why are we paying tuition fees to be taught how to design?

  6. Ha Ha
What they mean is they can teach the rudiments of autoCAD, Sketch-up, Vectorworks, for example, in a few days. It has taken three years to become a designer.

  7. Makes sense! I guess they're looking at it from an employer's perspective.

Incidentally, some exemplary work on your part last year. In particular, we're all looking at your lighting visualisations so we might rip them off... I mean, be inspired! Remember, imitation is the highest form of flattery.

  8. update- i have done my plan in cad but im not going to use it yet as i have it by hand too, but iv done it and i can have in my sketch book /portfolio to show i can use cad.

I have done my plan and sections by hand, now going to take them into photoshop to render them (for the first time by computer-so we shall see how this goes!)
Then to render my sequential sketches in the same style- wish me luck!!
